Dr. Mazariegos is an active pediatric liver and intestinal transplant surgeon and Chief of Pediatric Transplantation at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. His main clinical interests are focused on the care of pediatric patients who have liver and/or intestinal disease requiring transplantation or specialized surgical approaches to portal hypertension, hepatobiliary disease or tumors. He also specializes in treatment of adult and pediatric patients who develop acute liver failure and who may require specialized liver support therapies until they recover or until donor organs are available.

Dr Mazariegos active research interests are in optimizing long term transplant outcomes by understanding the clinical mechanisms of transplant tolerance and supporting work to understand rejection risk. He is also co-investigator of Medical Adherence after Liver Transplantation (MALT), a multicenter study evaluating adherence after liver transplantation Improving Medication Adherence in Adolescents Who Had a Liver Transplant – Full Text View – ClinicalTrials.gov

The Network currently consists of 16 leading institutions in North America accounting for over 50% of the pediatric liver transplant volume in the United States and Canada. Collaborators from the Network have been awarded PCORI Engagement Award funding as well as a 3 year U18 grant to study dissemination of patient reported outcomes via mobile app technology Starzl Network Patient Reported Outcomes – Full Text View – ClinicalTrials.gov
