STI investigators publish manuscript in Science on innate immune memory in transplantation

Lakkis and Oberbarnscheidt groups in collaboration with Xian Li (Houston Methodist Research Institute), investigators at the STI and the Department of Immunology at Pitt, and researchers in Toronto, Manitoba, and Berlin have published a manuscript in Science titled, "PIRs mediate innate myeloid memory to non-self MHC molecules" by Dai et al.  They report that monocytes and macrophages acquire memory specific for particular MHC-I antigens using paired immunoglobulin-like receptors-A (PIR-A).  This pathway contributes to recognition and rejection of allografts and expands antigen-specific, immunological memory to include myeloid cells.
