Since its inception in 1985, the University of Pittsburgh Transplantation Institute, re-named the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute (STI) in 1996, has remained at the forefront of solid organ transplantation research. Beginning with the introduction of liver transplantation and later, the launching of tacrolimus (FK506) into clinical practice, STI continues its cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical research to improve transplantation outcomes and the quality of life for transplant recipients.
The research faculty and staff of STI bring expertise from multiple disciplines that include immunology, surgery, pathology, nephrology, molecular biology, genetics, and cell physiology. Through the use of invertebrates, rodents, and large animal models, our research teams are exploring fundamental questions in the following areas: innate immunity, dendritic cell immunobiology, adaptive immunity, xenotransplantation, composite tissue transplantation, liver transplant biology, and viral infections in immunocompromised hosts. Our clinical research programs are focused on developing immunological monitoring strategies and on conducting clinical trials to minimize immunosuppression, with the ultimate goal of achieving transplantation tolerance.
